Explore the cultural side of Halloween this October in Toronto!

Acclaimed Spanish director Guillermo Del Toro is perhaps best known for bringing strange and fantastic creatures to life in his films; from the vampires of Cronos to the faun and other beasts of his masterpiece Pan’s Labyrinth (not to mention the menagerie featured in his Hellboy films!), Guillermo Del Toro has mastered the art of plausibly implausible life! That’s why the Art Gallery of Ontario is bringing a display of his production materials to Toronto in October. The show, titled “At Home With Monsters, “ features over 4150 objects from Del Toro’s productions or from his private collection of objets d’art that showcase the imaginative process of this true auteur. This show runs from September 30 to January of 2018, but can you imagine a better time of year to see these works than Halloween? Details available here.

Alfred Hitchcock’s acclaimed thriller, North by Northwest, refers to Shakespeare in its title; “I am but mad North Northwest,” says King Lear, “but when the wind is southerly I know a hawk from a handsaw.” The premise is about a man who is thrown into a situation that doesn’t make any sense, where all the comforts of his life are upended and he is forced to contend with the chaos he finds himself in… and when you think about it, isn’t that what Halloween is all about? That may or may not have been the thinking of The Royal Alexandra Theatre, who are putting on an imaginative stage adaptation of this classic film all month. Find out more here!
