Toronto is chalk full with great public art & sculpture at every turn.  If you enjoy walking as a tourist, be sure to keep an eye out for these iconic pieces of public art that have helped define Toronto as a great city of the arts.  For a complete list of public art in Toronto, click here.

Douglas Coupland’s Monument to the War of 1812
Bathurst Street and Lakeshore Boulevard West

Douglas Coupland is one of Canada’s premiere visual artists and authors.  His work touches on themes of personal and national history, particularly his book and accompanying documentary Souvenirs of Canada, a meditation on what it means to be Canadian.  Coupland created this monument as a response to American national claims to re-write the history of the war of 1812 as a victory for the U.S.  Visitors to this monument will experience a thorough refutation of this thesis when they witness the clarity with which Coupland demonstrates Canadian victory over our erstwhile enemy.  This is a monument about identity, history, and winning and losing.

Remembered Sustenance by Cynthia Short
Metro Hall on Wellington Street West

Remembered Sustenance is located next to an outdoor daycare’s playground and thus seeks to capture a spirit of playfulness and whimsy.  The sculpture consists of a group of bronze, cartoon-like animals migrating across a lawn towards a curtain held apart by two birds.  The sculpture serves as both a play-site for children and a suggestion that remembrances of playfulness and silliness can sustain and infuse our adult lives.

Monument to Multiculturalism by Francesco Perilli
At Union Station, Front Street West and Bay Street

One of Canada and Toronto’s defining modern features is the pervasiveness and broad acceptance of the multicultural ideal.  Since 1985, The Monument to Multiculturalism has been the first piece of public art seen by those arriving to the city by rail.  Witnessing this incredible monument to the peaceful co-existence of cultures in the heart of Toronto is an unforgettable experience.
